Flying Zenith Aircraft
As described on the previous page we provide transition training, first flight assistance, flight testing, and ferry services for Zenith aircraft.
What is different about flying a Zenith? Let's first talk about the 700-series aircraft (701, 750 STOL & Cruzer, and 750 Super Duty). These are all lightweight, draggy, high-lift/high AOA aircraft which have some unique flying characteristics. During high-power operations there is a significant left-turning tendency (on clockwise-turning props) due to P-factor (remember that?). This is much more pronounced in the Zenith due to the AOAs. This, of course, is countered with significant opposite rudder. If you've become lazy on the rudder due to flying more docile aircraft then this can bite you and has resulted in a number of off-runway excursions during initial takeoff or during go-arounds. Another characteristic is the very sensitive flight controls. The 700 series aircraft are all designed to fly very slow and these slow airspeeds it's important that controls remain effective throughout the movement range. This has the result of making the controls very light and responsive during higher-speed operations. It's fairly common that this sensitivity results in over-control, which itself has resulted in a bit of bent metal. Finally, while the aircraft is considered by many to be a 'stall-proof' design, there is a point where the sink rate develops to a high level at a certain lower airspeed/power range. This combined with the light-weight/low inertia and high-drag means that during a level-out/flare that airspeed will diminish rapidly (they do NOT float) resulting the high sink rate. If this happens 10 ft above the runway you'll come down with a significant bang. The remedy for this is to carry a little extra power during landing until you become proficient at timing the landing. With (a lot of) practice you'll eventually be able to do a full power-off, full-flap landing but don't try to do this too early. This is another significant contributor to bent up Zeniths.
